by John Emerson (2008) is a nice booklet, free to download as pdf:

The topic fits nicely with ideas by Otto Neurath, and more recently, 
Gapminder ( http://gapminder.org/about/about/ ). 

 

I'd love to hear it if someone knows of other resources concerning 
graphics (information visualization) for public awareness / social change / NGOs.
