This seminar proposes to demonstrate how three essential
layers of digital media -- Information, Interactivity and
Design -- are used to shape the new global economy; and
will explore the process and application of `Information
Architecture' when it is used to create successful

aims to demonstrate how the efficient combination of
Information Design, Interactivity Design and Graphic
Design serves to save time and money, while increasing
brand awareness in the interest of long-term profits.

2) Annual conference of the
Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators (ISTC)
11 - 13 September, 1998
Churchill College, Cambridge, UK
-------------------------------------------------------------
WEBSITE: http://www.istc.org.uk
(Note: this site does not work well on small monitors)
BACKGROUND:
The ISTC is the British equivalent of the Society for
Technical Communication, and this event is its annual
conference. Because 1998 is the 50th anniversary of
the ISTC and also of the first computer, the conference
programme will reflect these twin anniversaries,
looking at developments over the last 50 years
and opportunities for the future.

3) Lifelong learning on a connected planet
21 - 23 September 1998
Oxford, UK
-------------------------------------------------------------
(Editor's note: though this conference topic is not central
to information design, we include it because many information
designers are active in the field of educational technology.)
WEBSITE: http://www.tall.ox.ac.uk/alt/alt-c98
BACKGROUND:
This conference of the Association for Learning Technology
is inspired by the work of the Technology Assisted Lifetime
Learning programme (TALL) at the University of Oxford, who
are hosting the event. The conference programme is to
include papers, discussion workshops, a poster exhibition,
demonstrations, a conference banquet and local tours.
"As the Internet continues its growth, how are learning
technologists seeking to harness this planet-wide
infrastructure? How can communication and information
technologies offer new educational opportunities to
under-represented groups of users? And can technology
bring about affordable lifelong learning?"

to lists of papers and posters under the following
topic heads:
